Our first round of volunteer application deadline is the 10th of December 2024. Following this deadline, we will let you know whether or not you have been selected for an interview. Once you have completed the interview and your application has been reviewed, we will confirm whether or not you have been accepted into our 2025 volunteer program. What You Will Learn
During your time volunteering here at the Mediterranean Marine Life Center you will gain fantastic knowledge and hands on experience working with a non-profit conservation charity.
You will:
- Gain experience combining sustainable tourism and conservation.
- Experience the Caretta caretta sea turtles and hatchlings in their natural environment, dolphins, and likely catch a glimpse of the very shy and extremely endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) they are wild animals so we cannot guarantee this!
- Work alongside a dedicated team, and learn from the turtle legend, Yannis Vardakastanis (the Founder & Owner of the Zante Turtle center) who has been working with and researching turtles for over 30 years!
- Make a great first step towards your career in practical conservation.
- Make a lasting one-off contribution to the preservation of endangered species, we are a non-profit non-governmental organisation that relies on volunteers to help support our mission, your time and help will be much appreciated!
- Experience Greek culture first-hand.

Interested in volunteering with a turtle information center in Greece?
Our volunteers learn how conservation and sustainable tourism can work together to benefit tourists, locals, and wildlife alike.
When you come to do volunteer work on Zakynthos you will be part of a small team that researches and records the effects of tourism on the local environment, providing information on the local flora and fauna to visitors, participating in beach and forest litter picks, and helping us manage our turtle information center. This warm and lush island is a haven for all sorts of wildlife, the forests are a stopover for migrating birds, the beaches are a favoured nesting destination of the Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtle), and the island is home to over 6,000 species of rare and delicate flowers. This special opportunity to volunteer at our sea turtle information center in Zakynthos is a once in a lifetime experience.
Volunteers are required to commit for at least two weeks to maximize learning outcomes, and personal growth, and be provided with the appropriate training. Throughout their time our volunteers are supported by the Program Director, and interns, who will conduct training, initiation and orientation, develop schedules according to volunteers’ interests, and plan social activities, amongst other support.
